Town Offices Closed: Oct 12th

Town Offices will be closed for Indigenous People’s Day on Monday, October 12th.

While federally recognized as Columbus Day, by celebrating Indigenous People’s Day we are reminded of the foundational strength, courage, and resiliency of America through the Indigenous communities we honor.

Having populated the Western Hemisphere for tens of thousands of years the first people have made, and continue to make, major contributions to our society, from medicine and travel to agriculture and invention (you can find some examples here)! Many of their contributions go unrecognized as a result of generations of inequities–stemming from the colonization of America–that continue to be a reality for Native communities. Celebrating Indigenous People’s Day means we elevate Indigenous voices and honor their legacies while nurturing understanding and respect for diverse cultures. Learn more about the history, culture, and traditions of America’s Native communities at the National Museum of the American Indian.

Want to know how you can celebrate Indigenous People’s Day? Here are some fun ideas:

Find out what Tribal territory you reside in with the Native Lands interactive map and from there learn about the unique culture and traditions of the Indigenous People in your region. Visit museums and historical Tribal sites near you. Foster a connection with nature by checking out Indigenous trails and kayaking on the “long river” from the Stratford Boat Launch. Be sure to check in with Tom at the library and see if he has any books about Native Americans or learn about what you can do to support your connection to nature with the Stratford Conservation Commission. Continue your learning through November and celebrate Native American Heritage month!

However you choose to celebrate, we’re thankful to live in Coös “small pines” County alongside you.
