Zoning Board of Adjustment

The Board of Adjustment is a quasi-judicial body to evaluate cases where an interpretation of the Town’s land use or building ordinances is disputed.

It does not have any direct authority over decisions made by the Select or Planning Boards or any enforcement official. What it does have is authority to hear administrative appeals if a claim is made that there was an error in any order, requirement, decision, or determination, and, within well defined limits, it can authorize appropriate adjustments. It provides the opportunity for an initial appeal without the expense of going to court.
