Work to reshape Backstreet River Park is underway

Jul 22, 2025 | News

Backstreet River Park along the Connecticut River is undergoing a major overhaul this summer. Plans include a new, modern playground with pick-nick area, remaking the tennis court into a pickleball court, a new basketball court, and a multi-use path around the whole area following the river bank. A designated parking area is also planned.

Crates with the new playground equipment arrived in early July and work on the park upgrades has started. Only certain parts of the park will affected and closed off at any time, while the rest of the area remains accessible.

Currently, the basketball court and former tennis court have been torn up in preparation for resurfacing. The old playground equipment has also been removed. We’ll keep you updated on any further progress.

The Backstreet River Park project is largely funded through state and federal grants, with part of the matching funds coming from two regional Tillotson Funds.
