ID Mandatory for Elections & Update on Voter Registration Requirements

Feb 17, 2026 | News, Notices

The New Hampshire Secretary of State’s Office is reminding residents of the new voter ID law, which took effect days after the Nov. 5, 2024, general election. The law requires all voters to bring identification to vote in New Hampshire without exception. It eliminates a previous provision that allowed voters to sign a legally binding affidavit attesting to their residency if they did not have identification.

Under the new law, if a voter does not have identification at the polls, they will be turned away and asked to retrieve it.

The new law has also changed the voter registration process.

New voters are required to show proof of their identity, age, U.S. citizenship and domicile (primary residence address). Before, applicants were allowed to complete affidavits as an alternative means of proving their qualifications as a voter. Under the new law, applicants who don’t provide acceptable documentary proof are not eligible to be registered to vote.

As 2026 will be a busy election year, the NH Secretary of State’s Office recommends that residents planning to register to vote should make sure they have enough time to gather all the required proofs well ahead of the elections.

You can find more information on registering to vote at the NH Secretary of State’s website or contact your town clerk.
